Shwetarani Muragod is an OBGyn (Obstetrics and gynaecology) based at Mahalingapur, Bagalkot, Karanataka, consuming a plant-based diet since 2018. She realized how cruel and abusive are factory farming systems and started her journey towards a plant-based diet. She had her one pregnancy on a plant-based diet and delivered a healthy baby. Let’s read her story in her own words.
The story of Shwetarani Muragod
“ I was born vegetarian but started eating meat due to pressure from the family. Later, I was curious to explore what variety of meat tastes like and started eating meat, fish and seafood.
The turning point of my life was “Philip Wollen’s most inspiring speech on animal rights” video on YouTube. However, it didn’t turn me into vegan immediately. Slowly, I started my research on animal abuse and animal cruelty in factory farming, and I almost decided to quit animal protein.
The day I became a mother, I decided I’d give up milk and dairy products because I understood the value of mother’s milk to the baby. It was not easy, though, as I live in a remote place (Mahalingapur, Bagalkot) to get plant-based dairy alternatives. Still, I didn’t give up because I understood the struggle and cruelty animals face for our meals.
The journey was going smoothly until my pregnancy test became positive (2nd pregnancy) one day. I was very scared and worried about how I will manage my nutrition. But, to be honest, it went very smooth. I didn’t have any problems, and I didn’t gain much extra fatty weight.
To add this, I was tested COVID positive during my pregnancy, and I recovered well without any complications. So it was vegan+COVID pregnancy!
I delivered a healthy baby in Oct 2021. I am happy and proud that I didn’t harm any animals during my entire pregnancy and post-delivery while feeding my child. It was very torturing to hear all the lectures from relatives and friends about how cow/buffalo’s milk helps increase my breast milk production, which is wrong and unjust. A proper healthy, and balanced diet is all you need, exclusively available in plants. I even advise my patients to eat healthy plant-based food.”
